Chapter 31

Will

Once we were finally cleared to enter the main part of the building, we headed toward the office Zen shared with two other warlocks.

“Have a seat,” Zen told us as he shut the door behind him.

The office had three small desks, a few rolling chairs, and a card table with folding chairs in the corner. I grabbed two of the chairs from the card table and set them up by Zen’s desk.

“I don’t trust that Killoran guy,” Zen stated.

“Neither do I,” Aspen agreed. “It’s very suspicious that he just happened to show up in this area after his brother escaped from Hell.”

“I didn’t like either warlock who came in while we were at the front. That last one seems suspicious. Did you recognize him?” I asked Zen.

He shook his head. “He had a security badge, but he may not be from this area.”

“Ellery still makes me most suspicious,” I told them. “Did he smell like Cyrus? They’re about the same size, so Cyrus could be impersonating his brother to get around unnoticed.”

Zen shrugged. “He smelled a little like Cyrus, but it’s harder to say since they’re brothers and both seem fond of strong colognes. Cyrus’s made me want to gag, and I’m not much fonder of Ellery’s.”

“I don’t remember Cyrus’s cologne being that bad the few times I met with him in person,” Aspen remarked. “Then again, I don’t have a werewolf’s sense of smell.”

“It was strong enough to confuse a werewolf’s sense of smell,” I stated. “I probably should have considered that before I even asked the question. Both warlocks who entered while we were at the security desk wore too much cologne. It smelled like they’d bathed in it.”

“You might have been able to tell the difference if you’d met him before,” Zen added. “My nose isn’t quite as sensitive as a full-blooded werewolf’s.”

“Huh,” I replied. “It’s always seemed like Bryn’s nose is just as sensitive as mine.”

“It is,” Zen assured me. “We’re not identical twins.”

“I’d noticed,” I agreed with a grin.

“She also doesn’t seem to be nearly as annoying as you are,” Aspen added.

“She’s not,” Zen agreed with a fond smile. “I’m not saying my sister doesn’t get into as much trouble as I do, but I don’t think she takes nearly as much pleasure in pissing people off. She enjoyed it more when we were kids, especially in school. Back to Ellery Killoran.”

“We should look into him more. He might be hiding his brother somewhere,” Aspen stated. “I’d like to know more about the warlock who came in after him. He’s the type to be a member of the Sacred Well, and I wouldn’t be surprised to discover he’s an elder. I tried to get a look at his badge when he passed, but all I caught was the first letter of his name. I’m not positive if it was a B or an R.”

“I didn’t recognize him, and I didn’t see his badge at all,” Zen replied. “Let me check the logs to see who entered the building this morning.
